The Syracuse Regional Airport Authority (SRAA) today announced that passenger traffic at Syracuse Hancock International Airport (SYR) is up over 18 percent for the month of April, compared to April 2017. These numbers are the highest the airport has seen in over 10 years.
In addition to the 18 percent increase for the month of April, total traffic for the first four months of 2018 has increased almost 10 percent over the previous year.
The airport has recently made a number of new service announcements that will start in the next several months.
Earlier this year, Allegiant Air announced new nonstop service to Sanford/Orlando (SFB) beginning in May and new nonstop service to Nashville (BNA) that will begin in June.
Frontier Airlines announced in April that it will begin operating out of SYR starting in July. Frontier will start nonstop service to Denver (DEN) and Raleigh-Durham (RDU) in July and start nonstop service to Orlando (MCO) and Chicago O’Hare (ORD) in August.
“Bringing in additional service, more non-stop destinations, and lower fares have been a priority for the airport authority since we began managing the airport just over four years ago,” said Christina Callahan, Executive Director. “To see such record levels of growth, prior to the launch of our new markets, is very exciting and we are confident, a predictor of the future of Syracuse Hancock International Airport.”
As a result of the recent air service announcements, SYR will have a record 21 nonstop destinations and seven airlines. Passenger traffic is projected to increase significantly once all of the newly announced service begins.
“Since the authority assumed full airport operations four years ago, everything we’ve done has been to improve our customers’ experience and enhance our partner airlines’ performance”, said Patrick A. Mannion, Authority Board Chair. “With passenger numbers increasing by double digits, even in the midst of significant renovations and before Frontier begins its new service, well, that points to past success and a bright future”
The airport is also undergoing a major construction project that will be completed on October 31, 2018. The project will include a streamlined layout and new interior and exterior materials and furnishings to give passengers a more modern, functional, and welcoming space.
